Full Liquid Diet: What You Need to Know

What is a Full Liquid Diet?

One huge contraindication that I want to bring out for someone, that may be on a full liquid diet. So, today we’re going to talk about a full liquid diet. One of the questions I find myself answering a lot as a dietitian is what is allowed on a full-liquid diet.

So we’re just going to jump right into it with the definition of a full liquid, so a full liquid consists of foods that are liquid at body temperature, that provide nourishment with little stimulation of the gastrointestinal tract. A full liquid diet provides approximately 1,200 calories a day and 40 grams of protein but of course, the calorie and protein intake can go up depending if any type of snacks are provided in between the meals.

Full Liquid diet

The full liquid diet is a short-term diet and it’s indicated for if anyone has an oral surgery or if they have problems chewing or swallowing or as a post-operative transitional diet. The foods that are allowed on this diet are everything that is on a clear liquid diet. Clear liquid diet it is popping up now additional foods that are allowed on a full liquid diet includes milk products custards, puddings, ice cream, eggnog and other dairy products that are liquid at body temperature. One huge contraindication that I do want to bring out is if someone has lactose intolerance, they may not be able to tolerate the full liquid diet because it does include dairy products.

Liquid Diet recipes after oral surgery

Anyone who has just had jaw surgery this meal plan is going to be entirely liquid. Maybe not everyone has to eat 100 liquids right after their surgery but if you have your jaw closed shut with elastics or if it’s wired shut, then it definitely has to be liquids, and even if you can incorporate some soft foods right away. Hopefully, you can get some ideas from this article. But before that let’s quickly do a little bit of an introduction talking about why certain things are included in this meal plan. Because honestly, everything that’s going to be mentioned here has a pretty specific purpose.

Why need a protein-based liquid diet?

Protein for recovery

Our bodies need protein to build and repair tissues. So especially after we just have a surgery where things obviously need to be repaired. We need to be giving it enough protein. If it doesn’t get enough then it doesn’t have the tools it needs to repair. And protein also helps to fight infection which is also something you want to be prioritizing post-surgery. Because the last thing you want to get on top of everything else is an infection.

Now when we think of meat, we think of fish we think of eggs, we think of beans but a lot of these things we can’t have right after jaw surgery none of these are liquids.  So we really need to look to protein powders and meal replacement shakes instead. The protein powder which is actually a meal replacement,  shake is highly recommended.

Conclusion

A full liquid is the best diet that can be taken after oral surgery. Liquid diets are rich with important nutritional requirements of the body and helps to keep the body hydrated. So a protein-rich liquid diet can help to build muscles after surgery and it leads towards a speedy recovery.
